Sleep Disorders and Home-based Sleep Studies

In Australia, an estimated 1 in 3 adults experience regular sleep disturbances. If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, a home sleep study might be beneficial for you:

  • Snoring
  • Observed episodes of stopped breathing during sleep/waking during sleep gasping/choking.
  • Daytime tiredness, lack of concentration, or fatigue.
  • Morning headaches
  • Restless Legs

Special Considerations

  • Shift workers: Approximately 20-30% of shift workers experience Shift Work Sleep Disorder (SWSD).
  • Individuals with mental health issues: Sleep disorders can contribute to or exacerbate mental health issues. In Australia, 60-70% of people with depression also experience sleep problems.
  • Age: Sleep disorders can affect all ages, however, they tend to be more prevalent in older adults.

What is a Home-based Sleep Study?

A Home Sleep Study is a convenient and non-invasive way to monitor your sleep patterns and detect sleep disorders such as sleep apnea. This study takes place in your own bedroom, allowing you to sleep in your natural environment. It involves wearing a small device that tracks various sleep-related parameters.

How does it work?

  • Consultation: Discuss your sleep concerns with your GP or specialist. If a Home-based Sleep Study is appropriate, they can provide you with a referral for a home-based sleep study. Download our Referral form for a Home-based Sleep Study.

  • Setup: The monitoring equipment will be attached at our clinic or by yourself at home. It typically includes a small device worn on your chest, chest and waist straps to monitor breathing, some electrode wires/ECG stickers, and a finger probe to measure oxygen levels.
  • Sleep Monitoring: Sleep as you normally would while the equipment records data on your sleep patterns, breathing, and oxygen levels.
  • Analysis: Your sleep data will be analyzed by sleep specialists to diagnose any sleep disorders.
